News from our Team

So the boys have chosen a name we are officially RoboCreeps, Team #1903! They are working on logos and seem to be getting excited about things.
The designer of this years' Robot Game has made a video, explaining the game that the Team may want to watch a few times. CLICK HERE to view it.
The PDF file of the Robot Game and the Updates are at THIS SITE.

I told the kids today that they should probably be watching as many of the video as they can to get ideas - some of the videos can be found on the same page as the Designer's video... just click on PLAYLIST and they will appear on the right, and below the video.
THIS is the site we used to set up the mat the first time.

You can also Google FLL - Food Factor-  or other related topics.
If you find something good, let me know and I will share it.

Til next week......

NEW SITES

At our next meeting we will put the mat together and start looking at strategy for each of the Missions.
This first site has PDF files of how the Robot Game works. If you know the rules, and how the game is supposed to work, it will help us design a more effective strategy. Look at the ROBOT GAME PDF and the SCORING SHEET PDF (this one tells how many points each Mission is worth).
GAME UPDATES  game updates are VERY important. They clarify rules and set-up procedures. There have been 11 or 12 so far. We need to check these each Monday.

The next site you should check out is the PROJECT PAGE. This page is a guidebook on how to create and complete the Food Factor Project.

These sites are different videos from youtube:
THIS  one is a walk through of the mat and what this team thinks will be the missions. (before the actual mission information was released)
THIS  is a different Team setting up their field and doing a walk-through.

THIS video has some strategies to make your robot go in a straight line (if you are having problems with that)

Thease are just some random teams doing practice runs of last year's Robot Game:

Remember: We need ideas for a Team Name, and Logo........
See you all Monday at 3:30 ~ let's plan on staying until 5.

New Stuff

While in Cedar City I met with the State Coordinator from the University of Utah, Ann Bastien. She was very excited about the teams that are being organized in southeastern Utah. There are some teams forming from Grand, San Juan, and Carbon Counties. The organizers in Carbon have volunteered to host the qualifier for our region. That will give us a chance to go to a meet to qualify for the State Tournament at the University of Utah. The qualifier meet will be on Jan 7th at a place to be announced.
If you visited the links that I posted before, some of them talk about forming teams. FIRST LEGO League teams can be up to 10 kids from fourth to 8th grade. There are several parts of the competition ~ it's not just building and running the robot. There are the Robot Missions; the research project and presentation; and teamwork competition. Team members also do other activities to help build their problem solving skills, and learn to work cooperatively; and they also help with fund-raising so they can go to the tournaments. Each year there is a topic or theme for the annual competition. The 2011 theme is called Food Factor and it has to do with keeping contaminants out of food.

So if your name is NOT on the list and you are planning on attending, have your folks shoot me an email: shortboard51@yahoo.com
I will be sending out a group email next week so make sure I have your parent's email address also.
We are thinking about having a morning session instead of, or in addition to, an afternoon session. What is your preference??? You can comment here or send email.

JUNE CAMP

Our first camp was amazing. You guys really stuck with the problem solving! I'm looking forward to seeing what you will be able to do in July.

Be thinking about if you want to be on the competition team. I am going to include the FLL site on here so that those of you who may be interested can look and see what it is all about. The Team can be up to 10 kids. You would have to meet at least once per week, but most teams meet more often during the the competition season. The Season runs from September to January. Right now there are no scheduled qualifying events but there is supposed to be at least one in SE Utah and then the State Competition at the University of Utah in January.
There are several parts to the competitions: The Robot Challenge; The Research Project; and Teamwork. Team members must be between 9-14 years old, in January.
The FLL web site is HERE . Check it out. Feel free to email me if you have questions. shortboard51@yahoo.com
Remember~~ we a re looking for someone to build a practice table for us. We have the money to purchase the supplies... we just need someone who can build it.

THANKS for a GREAT Camp!!!!!!

LEGO CAMP

About a month ago we got funded for Robotics. We purchased five kits, including the kit for competition. We also paid for our registrations for Regional and National Event participation.
Today will be our first camp. We have ten kids signed up but may have a few walk-ons.

I was looking for something to show the first group of kids to get them excited about competitions and found this from one of the top winning teams:

FIRST LEGO League

We found out this week that our grant for First Lego League has been awarded!
While we are still waiting for someone to write a check I am very excited so I just HAVE to do something. So I am setting up this Blog.
I will try to keep up with this so that those who want to follow our progress can see what we are doing.
